PROFESSOR PAT UTOMI‘S LECTURE ON LEADERSHIP AND SOCIETAL DEVELOPMENT

KEY NOTES EXTRACTED FROM PROFESSOR PAT UTOMI‘S LECTURE ON LEADERSHIP AND SOCIETAL DEVELOPMENT DELIVERED AT THE 6TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP LECTURE OF CENTRE LSD LEADERSHIP SCHOOL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH KONRAD ADENAUER STFTUNG.

Professor Pat Utomi on the 18th of April, 2015 shared his thoughts on Leadership and Societal Development delivered as the Keynote Speaker at the 6th SET Graduation /Annual Leadership lecture of Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, Abuja, some of which are highlighted below:

“The power of citizens to lead is responsible for better leadership”

“We need to reduce unimaginable corruption in places like the petroleum sector under the name of subsidy which is a total scam”

He highlighted those things that make progress i.e. The Growth Driver’s Framework which are:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Policy Choice
  • Institutions
  • Human capital
  • Culture
  • Leadership, which happen to be at the center of it all

“When you destroy an institution, you destroy progress”

“Leadership shapes culture and culture in turn determines human progress”

During the course of his lecture, he lamented about one disappointing statement made by the outgoing President of the Federation, President Goodluck Jonathan at the World Economic Forum where he used the number of private jets acquired by his administration as a measure for Nigeria’s economic growth.

“We do not encourage work ethics in Nigeria; we value instant gratification which is a show of how corruption has eaten deep into our system as a nation”

He also talked about the popular leadership traits which are:

  • Leaders are servants
  • Leaders are shepherds
  • Leaders are stewards

And he added his own new trait which is “Leaders are solicitors”

“You can’t LEAD if you do not KNOW (knowledge is not a function of your certificate but your commitment to personal development)”

Leadership process begins with

  • Preparation (having knowledge, habit of sense, energy and passion),
  • Visioning (Having a burden and vision) and ends with
  • Execution (being able to articulate, communicate and have purpose/focus)

“The citizens are the ones responsible to hold Power (i .e those in position of authority) accountable”

“We have a duty to demystify power and change the psychic of Nigerian’s about power”

“It requires more than having power and being in position of authority to be a leader”

He rounds up by admonishing the audience not to judge a success of government by the numbers of tarred road, but by the level of value being added because Value determines and shapes human progress.
